Why are there tin cans trailing behind a newly married couple’s car while they’re heading for honeymoon?
So I’ve just rewatched The Terminal, starring my all-time favorite actor Tom Hanks, yesterday, and I did notice that when Enrique and Dolores got married there were serveral tin cans tied behind their catering car. I believe that I’ve seen this scene several times before. Do those cans have any special meaning?????????????????
Where I live it’s because of the risk of the couple running away. =) Sugar and cornflakes in the bed, people knocking on the bedroom door and the phone ringing are just a few of the pranks that newly wed couples have to suffer through, no wonder they want to run away, and often do.
I did however look it up and there were two other explanations. I’ve quoted them and provided links.
In some locations the couple would spend their wedding night in the barn. The bride’s girl-friends would dress her for bed and tuck her in and then the male guests would enter and kiss her good night Great sport was made of delaying and harassing the groom before he was allowed to join her. The couple could then expect pranks and peeping until everyone was too drunk or exhausted to remember. Our grandparent’s generation planned their weddings with escape in mind from this kind of tradition. The tin cans tied to the get-away car evolved from this custom.

Tin cans behind the car: This is a very popular way to see the newlyweds off, with tin cans rattling behind their car. This tradition originated as a method of keeping evil spirits away from the happy couple.

The custom is thought to date back to the Egyptians. Egyptians when they traded in goods would also exchange sandals. A father would give his daughters sandals to the groom to show his daughter that she was now the property of the groom. During Anglo-Saxon times the groom was believed to have tapped the heel of his bride to show she now belonged to him. There was also suggestions that people once throw shoes at the bride and groom (thank goodness for confetti) the practice wasn’t very popular with the bride and groom and later changed to shoes being tied to the bumper of the couples car instead.
Tying tin cans to the bumper instead is likely to have come about as it is much cheaper than using shoes!
